#StoriesofHope – Nancy and Bethany
Have you ever felt powerless? Have you ever felt like there
was no hope at all?
For Nancy, that feeling was ever-present after her daughter, Bethany, was diagnosed with a mental illness. “It was a difficult time. I shut down and wouldn’t discuss it with anyone.”Nancy was in New Jersey visiting with family when a relative suggested she attend the NAMI Family Support Group and NAMI Family-to-Family, the 12-week education course for family members and caregivers offered at her local affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness.
“NAMI Family-to-Family offers a way to connect with others. In the midst of a crisis, you may think or feel that you’re alone and powerless. The course is an excellent therapeutic tool for opening up and removing the stigma surrounding mental illness.”
No longer feeling hopeless, Nancy volunteers here time and talents as a facilitator of NAMI Family-to-Family and works to help other caregivers impacted by mental illness find hope. As their journey continues, Nancy and Bethany communicate more effectively and have found strength in each other.
You can help families like Nancy’s with the gift of hope this holiday season.
