Peer Support Specialist

You will be working with a Behavioral Health Navigator who will be assisting individuals when they are discharged from inpatient hospitalizations for mental health and/or co-occurring substance use disorder treatment. The goal of the program is to assist individuals upon discharge to ensure they are connected to follow-up care at Metropolitan Human Services District (MHSD) and NAMI New Orleans’ peer support groups and Drop-In Center activities. Work locations include NAMI New Orleans and Metropolitan Human Services District (MHSD). You will work with the Behavioral Health Navigator, at the Drop-In Center, and with MHSD staff under the direction and supervision of a NAMI New Orleans social worker.


  • Reliable transportation and/or be able to proficiently use public transportation
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Previous or current mental health treatment, be in recovery from a substance use disorder, and/or formerly homeless
  • Must feel comfortable working with others who are trying to achieve mental health or substance use recovery and supporting and assisting them on their personal journey
  • Must be certified as a peer support specialist or agree to receive the 2-week training sponsored by NAMI New Orleans. Will also be required to become certified as a facilitator for various NAMI support and education programs.
  • Must be able to document client meetings in an electronic heath record and maintain accurate progress notes (training provided)

Mental Healthcare Navigation Team (MHNT) and Volunteer Coordinator

Essential Functions

  • Become knowledgeable of current diagnoses, symptoms, and treatments.
  • Continually research what treatments and supports are available in the GNO area.
  • Become knowledgeable about all programs and services offered by NAMI New Orleans and facilitate referrals to those programs.
  • Provide telephonic and in-person mental healthcare navigation services, including assistance with setting up appointments, completing applications, and following up with individuals served and/or their families. This includes in-person meetings with family members when needed.
  • Provide screening, orientation, training, and oversight for a team of (intern and volunteer) Navigators.
  • Provide screening, orientation, and training for all NAMI New Orleans volunteers and interns. Assist with placement within programs.
  • Update and expand MHNT and volunteer resources/protocols/materials as needed.
  • Assist with updating and proof reading Family and Consumer Guides.
  • Maintain information database of MHNT interactions with individuals and families. Track and compile data related to MHNT program.
  • Make sure follow-up calls/emails are made in a timely manner.
  • Assist with spreading awareness of NAMI New Orleans services (including the MHNT) at health and resource fairs.
  • Apply for grant funding for MHNT and assist Education Coordinator and Development Director on grant applications (as needed).
  • Work in conjunction with Education Coordinator and Development Director on projects as needed/assigned.
  • Participate in fundraising activities/events and other NAMI New Orleans’ events.
  • Become certified and maintain certification in Youth and Adult Mental Health First Aid (MHFA).
  • Become certified as Mental Health First Aid instructor in order to offer Mental Health First Aid courses and/or Youth MHFA courses as scheduled.
  • Works in conjunction with Education Coordinator and Development Director.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

This is a part-time position. Typical days and hours of work are Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Friday 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Master’s Degree in Social Work

  • Valid Driver’s License and Auto Insurance.
  • Computer Literate.
  • Understanding of community support programs.
  • Able to provide screening, training, and support to volunteers and interns.
  • Excellent Oral and Written Communication Skills.

NAMI New Orleans seeks an Accounting Clerk to provide general office support with a variety of administrative and clerical activities and related tasks. The Accounting Clerk will be responsible for facility maintenance and assisting the Executive Director and Chief Financial Officer (CFO) with various administrative, accounting and clerical tasks. Essential Functions

  • Assists the Executive Director with her scheduling, including: the coordination of meetings of the Board of Directors and task forces, and the creation of meeting agendas and calendar inserts.
  • Assists CFO with preparation of financial reports for the Executive Director and Board of Directors.
  • Acts as the central purchasing coordinator for NAMI New Orleans- researching vendors, receiving quotes, and making purchases on behalf of NAMI New Orleans.
  • Maintains the CFO and Human Resources Director’s files (including personnel files).
  • Coordinates record destruction, entering records into electronic drop boxes for audits, and handling record requests.
  • Coordinates building maintenance including: maintenance requests, repairs, and building cleanings.
  • Oversees all license and certification applications and maintenance, including: CARF, vehicles, and Secretary of State. Maintains a licensing list.
  • Maintains insurance policy files.
  • Assists Human Resources Director with coordination of annual training.
  • Creates Accounts Receivable Medicaid and Medicare Aging Reports.
  • Reconciles balance sheet accounts, including: cash, accounts receivable, and liability accounts.
  • Maintains cash logs.
  • Creates and maintains schedules for accounting and audit purposes.
  • Assists the Executive Director and the CFO with budget preparation.
  • Drafts and edits policies and procedures based in collaboration with the CFO and Human Resources Director.
  • Tracks furniture, fixtures, and equipment including acquisition, disposition, and depreciation.
  • Assists with other related clerical duties such as photocopying, faxing, and collating as needed by the Executive Director, CFO, and Human Resources Director.
  • Coordination and oversight of record requests.
  • Presents one’s self in a pleasant manner to others.
  • Answers telephones promptly and directs the caller to the appropriate associate. Will transfer a caller to an associate’s voice mailbox when the associate is unavailable when needed.
  • Greets and directs visitors to the company when needed, in a pleasant manner.
  • Obtains the Executive Director’s signature on documents as needed.
  • Assists with fundraisers.

Required Education and Experience

  • Two years of administrative experience.
  • Two years of general ledger accounting experience.
  • Ability to independently create and maintain spreadsheets and documents in Excel and Word.

Activities of Daily Living (ADL) Counselor

NAMI New Orleans is seeking a part-time ADL Counselor for evenings and overnight shifts. Duties include demonstrating ADLs with new housing referrals at Womanspace, skills training, and mental health monitoring of residents. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
